Abstract

Tetanus is a health problem that occurs throughout the world, especially in developing countries due to poor immunization programs. Tetanus is acute toxemia caused by a neurotoxin produced by C. tetani characterized by periodic and severe muscle stiffness and spasms. This neurotoxin will inhibit the release of neurotransmitters in the central nervous system, causing muscle stiffness. A case report of a 29-year-old man came to the emergency department of the Arifin Achmad Hospital, Riau Province with complaints of stiffness all over the body since 2 weeks before admission to the hospital. Stiffness begins in the mouth that is difficult to open, followed by stiffness in the neck and the whole body. 3 weeks before the patient had suffered a sharp object injury on the right knee and was not treated properly. Vital Signs 135/80, heart rate 92, respiratory rate 22, temperature 36.6.0C. Physical examination revealed trismus, stiff neck, rigidity of abdomen, opisthotonos. The patient was treated in the intensive care unit (isolation room) and received adequate treatment.
